First Descent of the North Fork of Rough and Ready Creek

/ Wednesday, February 3, 2016

Rough and Ready Creek is a tributary of the upper Illinois River. I fell in love with it after my initial visit in 2011 and subsequently returned three more times to paddle this uniquely special creek. My most recent expedition with NWRC guides Nate Wilson and Ryan Saevitz involved carrying our gear for a day and a half to paddle it’s remote upper reaches. The most challenging part of running this upper section is being there when the conditions are right. You need to go in...

A Week Spent on the Middle Fork of the Salmon

/ Monday, September 14, 2015

At the end of August, I was able to join the last Middle Fork of the Salmon trip of the year. It was my first time down this river that I have heard so much about. It was an incredible trip that I will never forget. I left my house near Hood River, Oregon early on Tuesday morning. I headed East towards the Boise Airport to pick up ECHO co-founder and Idaho Whitewater-legend, Joe Daly. We slowly wound up the steep mountain roads, straight into the...

The 2015 Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival

/ Thursday, May 21, 2015

Well it was another great weekend at The 32nd Annual Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival. The lower water brought new race strategies, new lines, and fierce competition. There was a little bit of rain, but that didn't keep people away from getting on the river and enjoying the weekend. SOTAR, AIRE, Maravia, and NRS had rafts for people to demo, while Dusty's River Logistics, ReRack, and Goodwater Boat Works were providing shuttles all day. A huge thanks to all of them for making it possible do make...

Kayaking The Illinois River

/ Thursday, April 30, 2015

This adventure down the Illinois River was just a small part of the expedition my friend, Nate Wilson, went on to document a watershed from start to finish. By beginning high up in the watershed of Rough and Ready Creek and following it to the ocean, the project hopes to draw a clear connection between the proposed nickel strip mining there, and the impacts that it would have downstream. The water that flows through the southern Kalmiopsis helps bring life to rare and endangered plants, wildlife,...
