Class III Rowing School FAQ

Our Trip Details (PDF) is packed with useful info about the rowing school, but we know you might still have some lingering questions. Here are some of the most common ones we get about our Class III Rowing School.

Before You Book

Can I share a raft with my Friend/Partner/Child?

Unfortunately, no. In this course you’ll be rowing your own raft and we don’t allow passengers in that raft while you are learning.

My Friend/Partner/Child wants to join the trip but doesn’t want instruction or to row a boat. Is this allowed?

Yes! Reach out to our office to check availability. They’ll ride in an oar raft with one of our guides, but they may not be near you during the day. You’ll definitely be together at camp and lunch.

Is there a minimum age?

We don’t have official age limits for our rowing schools. All students need to be able to row a boat down the Rogue River for the entire 5-day school. If you’re considering having your child join, please call our office so we can discuss whether it’s appropriate.

Gear & What To Bring

Do you provide throw bags?

We do not provide throw bags for student boats. You’re welcome to bring one if you have it—but they aren’t required. If you bring one, make sure it has a locking carabiner to clip it to a D-ring.

Do you provide camp chairs?

Yes! We provide a chair for everyone at camp. There are no chairs available at lunch.

Can I bring my own dry bag instead of using yours?

Absolutely! Our gear boats carry communal gear and tent bags. Students generally carry their personal dry bag in their own raft. If you’re rowing a cataraft, we can put your dry bag on a gear boat.

Can I bring my cot or a second dry bag?

Yes, as long as you can rig it in the boat you’re rowing. Please bring straps!

I’m renting a boat from you. Can I have a specific size?

Most likely! Tell us what you’d prefer and we’ll do our best to make it happen.

Do I need a dry suit?

No, you don’t need one. If want one, you can rent one from of these companies:

Travel & Logistics

I’m bringing my own boat. Can I use your transportation back to Galice?

Yes, but your boat must be fully deflated and your frame disassembled to fit in our vehicles. If you want to avoid this, consider booking a car shuttle from Galice to Foster Bar.

I’m bringing my own raft/gear. Do I still need to attend the Galice meeting?

Yes! There will be plenty of NWRC guides at the ramp, so your raft won’t be left unattended.

Can I get my car shuttled to the takeout?

Yes! We recommend Whitewater Cowboys. If you book a shuttle, please let us know so we don’t reserve space for you in our takeout vehicles.

How can I get from the Medford airport to Galice without renting a car?

Taxi or rideshare is the best option. Book in advance since there’s no service at Galice Resort.

  • Tik Tok Taxi: (541) 727-7791 — $125 (4 ppl) / $135 (7 ppl)
  • Rogue Taxi: (541) 476-7773 — $140 cash / $150 card
  • Crater Lake Taxi: (541) 333-3333 — $150

Prices are per car, one-way, and current as of February 2025.

On the River

What is the weather like?

Weather varies widely. Mornings/evenings can be cool; daytime temps are typically 50º–90º. May/June trips have the highest chance of cold or rain. Late August and September are generally warmer and drier.

What is the river level typically?

The Rogue is dam-controlled, so flows are consistent:

  • May–June: 3000–4000 CFS
  • August–September: 1000–2000 CFS

Higher water doesn’t necessarily mean more difficult—just different. It’s a great river to learn on at a wide range of flows.

What is the water temperature on the Rogue?
  • May: 53ºF–64ºF
  • June: 61ºF–68ºF
  • August: 66ºF–70ºF
  • September: 60ºF–68ºF

You can check current & historical temperatures on the USGS website.
