There are a lot of things to love about river trips—they just might be the best kind of vacation (okay, we’ll admit we’re a little biased). But the truth is, different people enjoy river trips for different reasons. Some come for the whitewater, others for quality family bonding time, and plenty for the chance to unplug. Here, we break down –in no particular order– what guests say they love most about their time on the river.

Spending Time in the Wilderness
There’s a difference between just being outside and being in a truly wild place. Our trips take you through federally designated Wilderness Areas—places with no roads, no cell service, and very few signs of modern life. You might paddle under a footbridge connecting a trail or pass an old homestead from before The Wilderness Act was passed in 1964, but for the most part, it’s just you, your crew and the natural world.
Along the way, there’s a good chance you’ll spot wildlife—bald eagles soaring overhead, otters playing along the banks, and maybe even a black bear or two minding their own business in the distance.
One of the coolest parts about spending a few days out here? You start to settle into the rhythm of the river. You wake up with the sun, wind down after it sets, and spend your days fully outside. It’s a quiet kind of reset—a natural realignment of your circadian rhythm—that leaves a lot of folks feeling more relaxed, clear-headed, and recharged by the time we hit take-out.
“I had seen wonderful reviews about Northwest Rafting Company online, but the experience I had far exceeded my expectations. It wasn’t just an amazing rafting experience down the rogue, but the side hikes up the tributaries, jump rocks, scenic camp sites, and absolutely spectacular meals just sent the whole trip into another level, beyond what I could have imagined. From the moment the trip ended I was already planning my next trip with NWRC!”Meredith D
Time With Family And Friends
River time is quality time. On a river trip, there’s no need to plan meals, make activity reservations, or wrangle your group from one thing to the next (okay, maybe a little wrangling). Our guides take care of the logistics so you can relax and enjoy the experience as a participant—not the planner.

You’ll paddle together, explore nature on hikes, and share meals under the open sky. With no phones to check, there’s space for real conversations, spontaneous games, and the kinds of moments that turn into lifelong memories.

Kids love the freedom—rock skipping, swimming holes, treasure hunts—while adults welcome the break from daily responsibilities and the chance to truly reconnect (and maybe tap into their inner child too). Whether you’re celebrating something big or simply carving out time to be together, a river trip helps you focus on what matters most: each other.
Being Away From Technology
Let’s face it—most of us spend too much time staring at screens. Between phones, laptops, smartwatches, and everything else buzzing for our attention, it can feel like we’re never truly offline. A river trip changes that.

Out here, there’s no cell service, no WiFi, and no temptation to check your email “just one more time.” Your only notification is the sound of a rapid ahead, and your group chat is the crew gathered around the campfire. Instead of scrolling, you’ll be swapping stories, finally finishing that book that’s been gathering dust on your nightstand, or simply soaking in the rare joy of doing nothing in a truly beautiful place.
And the best part? Everyone else is in the same boat (pun intended). No distractions. Just real connection.
“Going down the river with a group together with the same goal of “disconnecting” from our day to day lives was priceless.”Serge Skiba

Rafting A Wild River
Let’s not forget one of the most obvious reasons why guests sign up for our trips: rafting is seriously fun. Splashy rapids, big smiles, and that unmistakable feeling of river magic—this is the good stuff.
Most of our trips offer three different types of boats, so you can experience the river in a way that suits your mood (or mix it up throughout the trip!):
- Oar Boat: Sometimes referred to as the “princess raft,” but don’t be fooled—these boats still charge through exciting rapids. The difference? Your guide does all the work. That means you get to enjoy the adrenaline and relax in the calm stretches between rapids. Just hold on, soak up the scenery, and let your guide take care of the rowing.
- Paddle Boat: This is the classic whitewater setup. Your guide calls the shots from the back, while you and your crew paddle together up front. It’s a team-powered ride full of splashy fun, laughter, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from working together on the river.
- Inflatable Kayak (aka “Ducky”): For the thrill-seekers and adventurers. You’ll follow and be coached by a “ducky momma” (the paddle boat in front of you), but otherwise, it’s just you and the river. It’s exciting, challenging, and super rewarding.
With 3 to 6 days on the river, there’s plenty of time to try them all—and discover your favorite way to experience the river.
“The NWRC guides and trip on the Middle Fork was absolutely amazing. The guides were gracious, helpful, funny and so knowledgeable. The food was incredible! On top of that, rafting a wild and scenic river was such an unbelievable opportunity. We got back last week and I’m already trying to figure out when we can book our next trip.”Annika K
